How Do VoIP Service Providers Work?

js1voip | 01 April, 2013 01:01

If you have not switched over to Voice Over Internet Protocol yet, you may be throwing away valuable money on your phone service. VoIP, as it is commonly called, has been available to consumers for several years. However, recent advances in quality make Voice Over IP Providers more competitive than ever. It is now possible to completely sever your ties with the land line telephone company and still have great phone service in your home or business.

While it may not completely replace your mobile phone due to the ease at which your mobile travels,VoIP offers a variety of conveniences that traditional phones do not. Unlike mobile phones and land lines, VoIP service providers do not charge premiums for call waiting, call display or voice mail. Your VoIP account also typically includes long-distance phone calls at no extra cost. VoIP costs consumers up to 50 percent less for these reasons.

What is VoIP?

Voice over IP Providers work by recording your voice and sending it over the Internet to a receiving line. When you speak into the recorder, the sounds are compressed and broken into small packets. These packets are sent through the Internet as a digital signal, which is then uncompressed and played back to the person with whom you are speaking.

It is unnecessary to use a computer for VoIP. Standard telephones can be integrated into your VoIP system. Normally, there is little distortion , and many people will not be able to tell the difference in sound. Because the only requirement for use is a high-speed Internet connection, VoIP is available nearly anywhere. Several Voice over IP Providers offer service to individuals and businesses in the United States and Canada.

How do I get started using VoIP?

If you have ever signed up for a mobile or land line phone service, you have already experienced most of what Voice Over IP Providers require of their subscribers to initiate service. The provider will sell you a monthly service plan and provide you with an interface box that is required for service. The interface box plugs into your land line and your high-speed internet connection. You will need to coordinate with your Internet service provider to gain a second IP address so the phone does not tie up your computer use.

Your Voice Over IP Provider will assign you a number based on the area code of the location of the interface box. It is possible, however, to select any area code you wish. VoIP providers can even transfer your existing land line telephone number to VoIP service, but this process may take several weeks.
